This project was a planned multi-phased response to correct a number of physical, operational and code related deficiencies experienced by the most prominent historic building in Saskatchewan. The first and most immediate requirement was to stabilize the building and arrest damaging differential movement by replacement of the original foundation system. The second phase included upgrading building accessibility and life/fire safety systems. Phase three introduced mechanical, electrical and elevator upgrades into the building. Design work continues on rehabilitation of the building envelope. A jacked in place precast concrete pile system was utilized to underpin and stabilize the building. Approximately 1,800 new piles were installed. The precast concrete pile system was chosen after extensive laboratory and field testing because of the economics that it offered and the significant shorter time required for installation.
